Paia: Last Real Town Before the Road to Hana
Paia: Last Real Town Before the Road to Hana
Paia Fish Market on Baldwin Avenue. Best fish tacos on the island, picnic tables under a tin roof, line at lunch wrapping around the building. The ahi burger — seared rare, wasabi mayo — is the order.
Shops along Hana Highway run from excellent to baffling. Maui Crafts Guild sells genuinely beautiful local work. Two doors down, someone sells tie-dye sarongs and crystals with equal conviction. That's Paia — surf town, hippie holdout, farm community, and it works because nobody's forcing it.
Fill your gas tank here if you're driving to Hana. No station for 40 miles. Stop at Mana Foods on Baldwin Avenue — natural grocery, best poke on the island in a deli case the size of a bathtub. Spicy ahi, taro chips, done.
